The
ASUS Eee EP121 is one of the world's fastest tablets. The EP121 is
powered by an Intel Core i5 processor and it is surprisingly light for it's 12-inch
size. This slate is among the biggest slates on the market, boasting a 12-inch screen and weighing
2.5-pounds. By comparison, the Apple iPad runs a 9.7-inch widescreen and weighs a pound less than the
EP121. The ASUS EP121 is targeted more to the enterprise customers beacuse of it's features and
price, but the front-facing camera and the HDMI port will make it appealing to others
too. The EP121 a complete Windows desktop replacement.
It is running Windows 7 Home Premium and it is powered by a Core i5-470UM processor, packs 2 to 4GB or
RAM, and a 32GB or 64GB SSD. It also feature a high resolution (1280 x 800) capacitive display with a
Wacom digitizer. The Wacom digitizer allows you to use the stylus to draw or take notes. It also supports pressure recognition, which is handy for the pre-loaded ArtRage graphics app but will also work in more serious design software. The other method of
input is a physical Bluetooth keyboard, which is optional and it is sold
separately.
The ASUS Eee EP121 also features a WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth, along with HDMI and USB ports, but
you also get a dual-mode touchscreen. That can respond to finger-input – including multitouch
pinch-gestures for zooming. The EP121 also comes with laptop-like features such as USB 2.0 port, mini
HDMI (Type C) an SD card reader, and a 2 mega-pixel front-facing camera. Built-in are 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth wireless, but 3G is not
available. For storage, your choices are solid state drives: 32GB or 64GB SSD.
The laptop-like features allows this tablet to run Word/Excel/Powerpoint/OneNote, Outlook, IM client,
Adobe Flash, IE/Firefox, database applications, fully Enterprise systems managable, VPN, and a fullly
enabled 'creation' device that accepts handwriting input. It is a really powerful tablet that will be
used by enterprise customers such as healthcare and financial services.

good
Screen is very bright and crisp (great viewing angles, great
for HD video)
Touch input is very good
Good memory storage (32GB or 64GB)
USB 2.0 port
HDMI out
SD card reader

Email and web browsing is
easy with touch or stylus input
Able to runWord/Excel/Powerpoint/OneNote, Outlook, Gmail, IM client, Adobe Flash, IE/Firefox, database applications, fully Enterprise
systems managable, VPN
It already comes with the keyboard and stand (the
bluetooth keyboard comes in handy)
Digitizer Pen, which is very useful for hand written
notes and also helps overcome some of the UI related issues with Win 7 (tiny icons,
etc.)
Art Rage (a draw and paint program - great for art
work, artists will love this tablet)
Many different input methods (touch, on-screen
keyboard, digital pen, bluetooth keyboard, mouse)
Keyboard button (great idea in allowing the user to
access the inking/keyboard on screen via a button. That button also doubles as 'esc' which is nice too when
watching full videos or playing games)
Also works great for reading books. Comes with Kindle
for PC preinstalled and optimized for touch screens. Flipping pages is as easy as moving your finger right
to left
Works with PS2 controller adapter
You can use it as a giant cell phone with Google
Voice and call + text anyone for free
A great tablet for corporate environment (great
productivity tool)
It does not run hot (good vents and quiet
fans)
Folio case (great design with the flip stand and very
robust)
CONS:
No 3G/4G
No GPS
Battery life could be longer (it last
for about 3-4 hours)
High cost (however it's worth the price)
Windows 7 operating system was not
designed for the multitouch environment (itis still not 100% tablet
friendly)
Glossy screen makes it hard to see in
sunlight
It crashes once in a while
Login is a pain after sleep mode, a fingerprint
reader will be helpful
The stylus is easy to lose and replacement is hard to
find (get a Penabled Wacom from Amazon for about which works perfectly and also fits in the
slot)
Keyboard (virtual) needs some improvements, but
digitizer makes up for it
The touch screen and stylus also don't work in
windows safe mode
Extremely difficult to insert and remove USB devices
on lower USB port. USB cover always gets in the way (use a USB cable
coupler to solve this issue)
Non-removable battery
Not easy to replace the SSD and
memory
Integrated Intel HD3000 graphics is not great for
playing games (still runs PC games well)
Stylus is difficult to remove
Tips from a EP121 user:
If you create an account as a standard user, the physical buttons (keyboard button, aero flip 3d etc.) will
fail to function for the standard user account. Admin accounts work fine.
Asus has an update for the ATK driver which will resolve the issue.
Just install over the current one. Note, even though this driver is dated from Feb. 2011, the tablet I ordered
last week did not have the latest update.
There are also some useful settings for windows 7 which can make using your slate easier.
Sorry if you already know this, but hopefully some users find this helpful.
- You can easily change the window titlebar, border and scrollbar sizes without installing any special window
managers (like origami). Just type "window colors and metrics" in the windows 7 search box.
You'll see a screen that you allows you to change the size of various window attributes.
I especially found that making the window border, and scrollbar slightliy wider made it much easer to use
touch. Changing the Window titlebar size also makes the minimize/maximize and Close buttons larger.
- Learn Windows 7 "flicks", they are definately a great addition for touch controls.
- I also noticed that the on screen keyboard would "change" slightly when typing in password fields. For
example, the OSK no longer had auto-complete and also wasn't highlighting the keys I pressed. A little
searching, and I found out it is on purpose for security reasons (You don't want someone looking over your
shoulder see you type your password). Well, its easy to change, just go into the OSK options and the help will
let you know what the different security settings do.
Other Tips:
Increase the size of scrollbar and caption buttons
(Start, type "Change Window colors and metrics", size 30 works for me on both)
Enable Flicks
(Start, type "Turn flicks on and off", I find the editing flicks very useful copy/paste/undo/delete)
Also if you buy one here are some tips to make touch
better:
1. In display settings set custom DPI to 150% or larger 2. Set folder's view to Medium or larger 3. Set icons to single click
