Acer ICONIA Tab A500 Full
Review
Acer ICONIA Tab A500 is a 10-inch internet tablet running Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) which
is the latest version of Android operating system especially designed for tablets and mobile devices. The
ICONIA Tab A500 tablet is very good looking, it's got a stylish brushed aluminum case and it weighs 1.6
pounds. It is a little bit heavier and bulkier than the iPad and the Xoom, but the rounded edges makes
it easier to hold it in your hands.
The buttons and
ports are all logically situated. The volume rocker and the rotation lock running along the right edge near the
top are distinctively contoured and easy to press. The power/sleep button is easily found at the upper right
corner, and conveniently glows an unobtrusive, alternating red and white while charging.
The ICONIA Tab
A500 has a 10.1-inch screen, 1280 x 800 TFT LCD display which is bright and crisp. The viewing agles are very
good which is a very nice feature. It also features a dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 processor with 1GB of DDR3 RAM.
The internal memory is 16GB eMMC storage, but you can expand the memory by using a microSDHC card for up
to 32GB of additional storage. The performance of the A500 is very close to the Xoom tablet and it is very
comparable in features, but it is much more affordable than the Xoom.
Speakers on the
A500 are of good quality, they produce rich and full sound and sound great. This is the first tablet with Dolby
Mobile audio built in. The A500 comes with dual cameras, a 2 megapixel front-facing camera and a 5-megapixel in
the back. The cameras are good, but not great. The photos and videos are little blurry and not very close to
high definition quality.
The ICONIA
A500 tablet also includes an accelerometer, a gyroscope, GPS, and a compass. It has Bluetooth 2.1 and 802.11
a/b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity. The Iconia Tab uses Acer's Clear.fi branding for its DLNA media server support, and
a Clear.fi app helps facilitate connecting the tablet to other DLNA sources.
When held
in the landscape orientation, the A500 has its power and headphone jacks at the left edge, toward the top;
Micro-HDMI output along the left edge, at the bottom; and a micro-USB port for tethered data transfers and a
USB-A port at the lower right edge. Along the top is the flap protecting the microSDHC card slot, and at bottom
is the obtrusively bulky dock connector (the dock is an optional $80 accessory that includes an IR remote
control).
Like
the Motorola Xoom and T-Mobile G-Slate, the Iconia Tab supports Adobe Flash 10.2, but, as on the G-Slate,
you'll have to follow a link in the Apps Menu to Flash's Android Market page to download and install the most
recent version. And since there's still no Android 3.0 version of Facebook, Acer's solution is to have a
browser link to Facebook, right in the Apps menu. At least Acer calls it a link to Facebook, unlike RIM's
approach on the BlackBerry PlayBook (which has app icons for Facebook and other Web services, when those are
really just browser links).
The A500 has 802.11n Wi-Fi inside, as well as Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR. There's the
aforementioned accelerometer, plus a gyroscope. Battery life is rated at eight hours of video playback or
10 hours of Web browsing, but it last for about 6-7 hours only in real
world testing.
Acer doesn't change much about Honeycomb, except for a few icons on the home screen and
the default background. When you turn on the A500 for the first time, you're greeted by four folders
instead of app icons. You'll find eReading, Games, Multimedia, and Social with a few apps in each. You
can add other apps to the folders to make them easier to find, or remove the folders
entirely.
The
Acer ICONIA A500 is a really competitive tablet PC, with great features and a very affordable price. It is not
an iPad killer, but many people preffer this tablet instead.
