Dell Inspiron Duo Full Review

 

The Inspiron Duo is an innovative design and has the potential to be both, a netbook and a tablet. It is running the Windows 7 Home Premium and has a dual-core Atom N550 processor.  It's got a 10.1 inch, 1366x768 resolution display which is quite sharp and bright, but the horizontal viewing angles are not very good. The tablet design is very clever, the side-mounted hinges allow the screen to flip vertically -- toward you to convert it in tablet mode and away from you to use it as a netbook.

 

Microsoft doesn't provide a usable virtual keyboard and neither did Dell, so entering something as simple as a Web site's URL can be difficult at times. Changing the orientation of the screen (from landscape to portrait and vice versa) is followed by a long screen flicker, which is unheard of in devices like the iPad and the Samsung Galaxy Tab. On the positive side, having a full blown operating system means that you can run all your favorite applications without going through an app store.

Dell Inspiron Duo PROS AND CONS

 

 

 PROS:

• Innovative convertible tablet design (attractive design)
• Full operating system (you can run all your favorite applications without going to an apps store)
• Multitasking and excellent performance with the powerful Intel dual-core Atom processor N550
• The screen is bright and responsive (high resolution)
• The physical keyboard is great when you need it (plus you can use a mouse too)
• Speakers are good (however you need to get the oprional Duo Audio station to get better JBL speakers
• It supports multitouch gestures (fantastic touch response)
• Music portal (It pulls in album art / tracks from your locally stored music, but also has tabs for Napster and Radiotime)
• Adobe Flash 10.1 support (you can view any Flash website on the Internet)
• Great web surfing experience
• You can use your Duo Inspiron as an alarm clock (nice feature)
• 320GB hard drive (fast)

CONS:

• No SD card
• Screen is a fingerprint magnet (this however is true with about all touch screens)
• Two-finger scrolling was not very accurate
• Poor vertical viewing angles (you need to keep the screen close to upright all the time to be able to view it properly)
• Screen orientation (you can change the screen orientation when it is locked over the keyboard only, and not in "tablet" mode)
• The DuoStage software is very slow
• Poor battery life (3-4 hours)
• Battery is not user replaceable
• Weight (after holding this unit for 1hour, your hand gets a bit tired)
