The Notion Ink
Adam tablet is a unique tablet, it has a unique design and great features that make this tablet a
replacement of a laptop. It weigs about 1.6 pounds, the same as the Motorola Xoom, has a 10.1-inch
multitouch (capacitive) screen (1024 x 600) and it is running Android 2.2 (Froyo version). The build of
the Notion Ink Adam is solid and of good quality. It is very easy to hold in portrait or landscape mode,
in fact is one of the most comfortable 10-inch tablets to hold and read on.
It comes with
a transfeflective PixelQi display with 1024 x 600 resolution. The PixelQi technology is new on tablets
and it has many advantages over regular LCD displays. It is a matte display, does not have glare, it is
fingerprint resistant, offers a crisp reading experience even in the sun, saves the battery
life and it allows the user to turn off the backlight by tapping the top button on the display. One
issue with the PixelQi display is that the colors appear washed out a bit, probably because of the
coating on the display.
Notion Ink
Adam doesn't need a proprietary keyboard, cables or docks because it's got two full-sized USB ports and a
full-sized HDMI slot. It detects USB peripherals automatically and seamlessly and the Adam can do full
1080p display mirroring over that HDMI port. The Adam is powered by a dual-core Tegra 2 processor which
makes the tablet really fast and smooth. The performance of the browser is also good supporting the Adobe
Flash video. It also features a microSD slot, a mini USB port, a 3.2 megapixel camera
(auto-focus) which swivels to swap between fron and rear-facing orientations and a SIM card
slot for 3G connectivity.
Adam's
software interface is called "Eden UI" and it was especially designed by Notion Ink to be customized and
easy to work with. You can add panels for certain applications by opening the application drawer and
dragging the icon down. If there is no panel for that app it will let you know. There are three panels
per screen, but you can scroll across to see more or open a cover-flow like view by tapping twice on the
home button. If you'd rather see all your apps at once, there's also a standard homescreen where they're
all stored, which you can access by tapping the clock.
A quick,
attractive and intuitive three-panel file manager, Sniffer lets you browse the contents of the Adam's
internal storage, microSD card and any attached USB drives, and copy, move, delete, rename, preview, play
and search for files. There's also a basic task manager included, and the Panel View is fairly nice,
giving access to the full functionality one panel at a time, though once again, it won't keep track of
where you were in the fullscreen version.
The speakers on the
Adam are grea tand deliver very good sound quality. The battery is also great, it was designed to last
for up to 15 hours, but in real world tests it lasted for 8-9 hours only.
The Notion Ink Adam is an excellent tablet that can
replace a laptop, but it still has a few issues that need to be resolved in order to be a widely
successful internet tablet.
